Choose Gingko Biloba Products Carefully !!!
Ginkgo Biloba is well known for its benefits for brain functioning. Ginkgo
Biloba is main constituent in many food supplements. But, questions have been raised regarding the authenticity of many
supplements sold as Ginkgo biloba. A study published in Canada states that your
Ginkgo biloba supplement may not really be what you think it is.
There are number of food supplements available in market
which are mislabeled and mislead the customers about Gingko biloba and consumers
may not be obtaining the products and benefits which they believe they are
getting when they buy supplements. DNA bar coding was used to check the actual
authenticity of popular supplements and also testing was done for the authenticity
of Ginkgo biloba supplements with DNA bar coding.
Study found supplements ware mislabeled and Gingko biloba used
for making supplements didn’t passed bar coding testing. Gingko biloba was adultered
with inferior substitutes. Primary considerations for the mislabelling of
products include the supplier incorrectly identified the plant materials or
because another generally less expensive material was substituted.
This study has been published in the journal ‘Genome’ Herbal dietary supplements which are
prepared from Ginkgo biloba leaves are consumed to improve cognitive capacity
via improved mitochondrial function and blood perfusion. Study found via DNA
barcoding that 83.8 percent of ginkgo supplements contained ginkgo.
In the supplements in which he found no evidence of ginkgo
Scientist wasn't certain if that is because the DNA was destroyed perhaps by
drying at very high temperatures or if the samples simply didn't contain any
ginkgo at all. Hopefully the DNA barcoding method to test for authenticity of
Ginkgo biloba will eventually be used by supplement manufacturers in order to
ensure that their supplements actually contain Ginkgo biloba.
