Protein powders and Other Food supplements can damage your Liver

Dietary supplements use are increasing day by day but whether it’s safe to use dietary and herbal supplements without doctor or dietician’s consult. Like medicines dietary substances are have to pass out through liver. Realize that every chemical ingested into the body has to eventually be dealt with by the liver.  One of the main functions of the liver is to detoxify or metabolize harmful substances in the blood.  This includes drugs and any other medicinal chemicals such as herbal and dietary supplements.  Oftentimes, the metabolism of such chemicals produces by-products that are harmful to the liver cells.
Although the liver cells can regenerate, chronic toxic exposure can lead to permanent damage and liver failure.  Alcohol is the classic example of a chemical that can cause liver damage (cirrhosis) when consumed in excess.
Protein powders, soya products, multivitamins & multi minerals, calcium preparations, iron tonics, baby health supplements and few herbs are few products that considered being safe but actually they aren’t safe as we think. Many of these products are advertised as natural and/or organic; therefore, consumers perceive them to be “safe.”   However, these products do not undergo the same rigorous clinical testing or regulation that the Food and Drug Administration applies to prescription or over-the-counter medicines.
More than 1000 medications and food supplements that cause drug induced liver injuries. It is difficult to identify the culprit of liver damage due to the number of medications and supplements patients are taking at same time. Use of these products more frequently led to death or liver transplantation when compared to patients who developed liver injury while taking conventional medications.
The list of drugs and herbal/dietary supplements that can lead to liver toxicity is quite long. These include black cohosh, Camellia sinensis (green tea extract, Hydroxycut), Comfrey, Germander, Greater celandine, Kava, Pennyroyal, Senna and Noni juice.  Ma Huang (Ephedra sinica) and Usnea (LipoKinetix) were removed from the U.S. market due to multiple cases of acute liver failure.
Liver is an essential part of our body system. Liver metabolize toxic products in body and helps in secretion of same. Liver prevent body from accumulation of these substances. One of these products is bilirubin.  Bilirubin comes from the breakdown of hemoglobin, the oxygen carrying molecule in our blood.  When bilirubin levels rise, it deposits in the skin and other tissues.  This causes an orange-yellow discoloration called jaundice.
Other symptoms of liver dysfunction and damage are weakness, fever, headache, malaise, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, body ache and abdominal pain etc.
